SENIORS: Just for Hilltop students. 1) The Madden Family Memorial Scholarship is offering up to (5) $200 scholarships for students going to Southwestern College. Seeing as that is most of you, I expect many applications!! You just need a 2.5 minimum GPA and write a 1 page essay on why you deserve the scholarship. Can’t get any easier than that. 2) The M & M Scholarships is a $300 scholarship given out to a student who will be attending San Diego State University and who has lots of school spirit ie: band, sports, ASB, cheer, etc. 3) The Dr. Fuller Scholarship is worth $1000 and is for students who have excelled in community service. You need to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and no D’s or F’s in citizenship. 4) The Dr. John L. Rindone Memorial Scholarship is worth $500 and is looking for students going to a 4 year college/university, plans on becoming a teacher, with emphasis in one of the following: history, political science, athletics or fine arts. TIBIT OF THE DAY: Schools that hope to create a culture of continuous improvement should provide every teacher with results from frequent, common formative assessments on a timely basis but they should not use those results to compare and assess teachers. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, has used frequent, common formative assessments developed by collaborative teams of teachers to drive its continuous improvement process that has made Stevenson one of the most celebrated schools in America. Over the course of those two decades, common assessments have been administered thousand of times, and on every one of those assessments, one teacher found that his or her students had the lowest scores on the team. Stevenson administrators and teachers recognize there will always be a teacher with the lowest results on any given common assessment, just as there will always be 50% of the students in the bottom half of the graduating class. Therefore, when teams work collaboratively to analyze the results from commons assessments, their focus is not on who had the best or the worst results, but rather on what they can do collectively to improve student learning. PLC TIDBIT OPF THE DAY: Use apples to apples comparisons. Comparisons are most informative when conditions are similar. Schools with students from high-performing communities often take great satisfaction in “comparing” the performance of their students to state averages, but such comparisons do little to promote improvement. If a school places students into classrooms on basis of multiple ability groups, it accomplishes little to compare the performance of students in the highest group those in the lowest. SENIORS: Just for Hilltop students. 1) The Madden Family Memorial Scholarship is offering up to 5 $200 scholarships for students going to Southwestern College. Seeing as that is most of you, I expect many applications!! You just need a 2.5 minimum GPA and write a 1 page essay on why you deserve the scholarship. Can’t get any easier than that. 2) The M & M Scholarships is a $300 scholarship given out to a student who will be attending San Diego State University and who has lots of school spirit ie: band, sports, ASB, cheer, etc. 3) The Dr. Fuller Scholarship is worth $1000 and is for students who have excelled in community service. You need to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and no D’s or F’s in citizenship. 4) The Dr. John L. Rindone Memorial Scholarship is worth $500 and is looking for students going to a 4 year college/university, plans on becoming a teacher, with emphasis in one of the following: history, political science, athletics or fine arts. SENIORS: Just for Hilltop students. 1) The Madden Family Memorial Scholarship is offering up to 5 $200 scholarships for students going to Southwestern College. Seeing as that is most of you, I expect many applications!! You just need a 2.5 minimum GPA and write a 1 page essay on why you deserve the scholarship. Can’t get any easier than that. 2) The M & M Scholarships is a $300 scholarship given out to a student who will be attending San Diego State University and who has lots of school spirit ie: band, sports, ASB, cheer, etc. 3) The Dr. Fuller Scholarship is worth $1000 and is for students who have excelled in community service. You need to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and no D’s or F’s in citizenship. 4) The Dr. John L. Rindone Memorial Scholarship is worth $500 and is looking for students going to a 4 year college/university, plans on becoming a teacher, with emphasis in one of the following: history, political science, athletics or fine arts. PLC TIDBIT OPF THE DAY: In a PLC the process of collaboration is specifically designed to impact educator practice in ways that lead to better results. Over and over again we have seen schools in which staff members are willing to collaborate about any number of things – dress codes, tardy policies, the appropriateness of Halloween parties – provided they can return to their classrooms and continue to do what they have always done. Yet in a PLC, the reason teachers are organized into teams, the reason they are provided with time to work together, the reason they are asked to focus on certain topics and complete specific tasks, is so that when they return to their classrooms they will possess and utilize an expanded repertoire of skills, strategies, materials, and ideas in order to impact student achievement in a positive way. RED RIBBON WEEK

Tobacco was first used by the peoples of the pre-Columbian Americas. Native Americans apparently cultivated the plant and smoked it in pipes for medicinal and ceremonial purposes.

Christopher Columbus brought a few tobacco leaves and seeds with him back to Europe, but most Europeans didn’t get their first taste of tobacco until the mid-16th century, when adventurers and diplomats like France’s Jean Nicot—for whom nicotine is named – began to popularize its use. Tobacco was introduced to France in 1556, Portugal in 1558 and Spain in 1559 and England in 1565.

The first successful commercial crop was cultivated in Virginia in 1612 by Englishman John Rolfe. Within seven years, it was the colony’s largest export. Over the next two centuries, the growth of tobacco as a cash crop fueled the demand in North America for slave labor.

The negative health effects of tobacco were not initially known; in fact, most early European physicians subscribed to the Native American belief that tobacco can be an effective medicine.

That changed in 1952, when Reader’s Digest published “Cancer by the Carton,” an article detailing the dangers of smoking. The effect of the article was enormous: Similar reports began appearing in other periodicals, and the smoking public began to take notice. The following year, cigarette sales declined for the first time in over two decades.

In addition to their excellence, Connor Vaughn and Gustavo Gonzalez earned top honors in their divisions and literally brought home the hardware winning computers for their efforts. AP TESTING: The deadline to turn in your AP test applications is Friday, March 12th to the ASB office. The cost is $86.00 per exam and $8.00 if you qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. (Walters)

ATTENTION SENORS: Those who still have the Entertainment Book money out need to get the money in now. We have paid for the books and now need to recoup the money. Bringing the book back now is not an option. Money not turned in by February 28th will go to the Library as a fine. Anyone still wanting to sell the last 32 books (we have paid for) can stop by Room 1511 and check them out. All money from these sales goes toward your Senior Prom. Some seniors have earned a free book and will receive it the first week of March. Remember, selling 5 books earns 1 free one. Selling 5 books earns 5 hours of community service. (Gutierrez)

SENIORS: If you are planning on attending Southwestern College in the fall and have financial need, check out the Chula Vista Police Activities League (PAL) – Jim Zoll Scholarship. Need only to have a 2.0 GPA. If selected, the scholarship will pay for all of your tuition/registration fees, parking passes, books and paper, binder, etc. This is a great scholarship. 2 years of college paid for. ATTENTION 9TH AND 10TH GRADE FEMALE STUDENTS: The Adelante Mujer Conference will be on March 6th, 2010 at Eastlake Middle School. This is an exciting opportunity for you to attend career workshops by some of the most dynamic women in San Diego County. If you are interested in attending, please pick up a registration form in the Counseling Center. The deadline to sign up is February 26th, 2010. Please return completed forms to Ms. Del Rosario.

ATTENTION JUNIORS: If you plan to attend a four-year university directly out of high school, you MUST take the SAT or ACT exam. In addition, if you plan to attend a UC school, you must also take the SAT Subject tests. Don’t forget to sign up for the SATS or ACTs if you haven’t done so already. The registration deadline for the May 1st SAT exam is MARCH 25th. The registration deadline for the June 5th SAT exam is APRIL 29th. To sign up for the SATs go to: www.collegeboard.com. March 5th is the registration deadline for the April 10th ACT exam. May 7th is the registration deadline for the June 12th ACT exam. To register for the ACTs go to: www.actstudent.org.
